Traces of flowers
In the 1970’s my mother began pressing flowers and leaves and she used these to make pictures but mostly greetings cards, which she sent to all her friends and relatives right up until her death in 2024. The presses and little drawers containing her archive of specimens was one of the few things she had in her small room in the nursing home where she died. I brought them home with me after scattering some into the hole where we buried her ashes on top of my father’s. There are 176 small specimen packets, all labelled and a notebook, the first (the second is missing) she began in summer 1980 and filled by 1996, with a record of all the cards she sent recording the date, the name of the recipient, the occasion and the variety of flowers and leaves. The last record in this first notebook is number 1224.
Impressing her specimens into clay tiles to represent the packets and tracing my mother’s descriptions seemed an appropriate way to memorialise her long term project.
